Note to the Minister
Relations with the GDR
During a recent meeting with the GDR Ambassador to Arab countries (see summary of 17 June), we were informed that the East German government was favorably contemplating the de jure recognition of our government. It was said that this would constitute a unilateral act that involved no action on our part. “This recognition would take place under the same conditions of that extended by China” noted the Ambassador. Once the principle of this recognition takes place, it will be up to us to set a date when it could be announced. This represents a new position that we must acknowledge. We believe in principle that there is no reason to oppose this recognition, especially since a request had been made to that end by the GPRA.

Note explains that the East German government is contemplating the unilateral "de jure" recognition of Algeria's government, and recommends that Algeria does not oppose this recognition.
