Brazil-Argentina Foz do Iguaçu Joint Declaration on Regional Nuclear Policy

JOINT DECLARATION ON REGIONAL NUCLEAR POLICY

The President of the Argentine Republic, His Excellency Dr. Raúl Alfonsín, and the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, His Excellency Dr. José Sarney, following conversation held in ………………………………. from ……………… to ………… of November 1985, and considering:

that nuclear science and technology is of transcendental value in the life of every modern country to push forward economic development in a significant manner;

that both countries have made efforts during many years in the research and study of the peaceful applications of nuclear energy; and that this has required high investment in order to reach a significant level of knowledge that now permits them to have access to the possibility of benefitting their respective peoples with the advancement deriving from the peaceful uses of nuclear energy;

that cooperation between Brazil and Argentina will be a multiplier of the benefits that they may mutually obtain from the peaceful uses of nuclear energy;

that such cooperation should be open to all countries in the region that are interested in participating in it, therefore  

Declare:

1. Their commitment to develop nuclear energy with exclusively peaceful purposes (ilegível)

2. The purpose of cooperating closely in all fields of the peaceful application of nuclear energy and to complement each other in the aspects that they consider convenient to agree;

3. The aspiration that this cooperation be extended to the other Latin American countries that may be interested in the same objectives;

4. Their decision to implement a system of mutual guarantees about the exclusively peaceful utilization of nuclear materials, equipment and facilities in both countries.

With such objectives they agree to convene a meeting at the level of…………….. within ……… days in order to study the ways to achieve the execution of the present Declaration.
