Cable from the Chinese Embassy in Hungary, ‘Please Inform Us of the Appropriate Attitude towards the Hungarian Events’

This document was made possible with support from MacArthur Foundation

To the Foreign Ministry and Party Central Committee:

Following Nagy’s statement today the rifles and cannons slowly fell silent, as if the fight had come to an end and order had been restored.

It is possible that higher- and lower-ranking Hungarian officials wish to find a means, on the occasion of meetings, to find out our attitude towards the events. How are we to respond? If any embassy, such as the Polish, proposes that we express our sympathy via the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, or congratulate the government, how should we react? Requesting swift instructions.
