Re: Your Telegram, Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau’s Telegram No. 3738

1. On the 23^rd, Orita called on the State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs Pelletreau (Okamoto attended from our side, Ehrman from the other side) and reported the contents of paragraphs 1 – 3 of telegram no. 112 from Jeddah to the Foreign Minister.

2. The other side, after expressing its appreciation and saying that it would deliver the contents of the report promptly to Secretary Shultz, said the following:

(1) Minister Abe’s expression of concern to Syria regarding the seven hostages was truly timely, and we are deeply thankful. The substance of the Syrian side’s remarks to Minister Abe is similar to what we have obtained from Syria, which shows that Syria is moving in the right direction.

(2) With every country’s cooperation, the United States would like to ensure the safety of the Beirut airport. The Lebanese side still has not returned the TWA aircraft. Restoring order and safety to the Beirut airport will be above all for Lebanon’s own benefit.
