15 February 1960

A luncheon was held at the Embassy in connection with the 10th anniversary of the Soviet-Chinese treaty of friendship, alliance, and mutual aid at which up to 100 people attended, including 30 Chinese Embassy officials and all the ambassadors. KWP CC Presidium members Kim Il, Kim Chang-man, Nam Il, Ri Hyo-sun, Jeong Il-yong, candidate Presidium member Han Ang-cheon [sic], and Deputy Premier Jeong Jun-taek were present at the luncheon.

In addition to me, Kim Il and Chinese Ambassador Qiao Xiaoguang gave brief speeches.

The luncheon passed in a warm, comradely atmosphere.

After the luncheon KWP CC Presidium members and the Chinese Ambassador came to me in the apartment where we spent about two hours in a comradely atmosphere.

A conversation which took place was about the importance of the trip of Cde. N. S. Khrushchev to Indonesia, India, Burma, and Afghanistan; the upcoming summit conference; the French A-bomb test in the Sahara; the visit of the KWP delegation in Moscow headed by Kim Il; the progress of the DPRK's preparations for spring field work; and about the fight for the presidential seat in South Korea which has started; etc.

In a personal conversation, in reply to my comment that this time their trade delegation is being delayed a long time in Moscow, Nam Il said that the signing of the protocol was delayed as a consequence of the prolonged consideration of the issue of the deliveries of gold. Right now Kim Il Sung has given instructions to prepare a trade agreement including deliveries of gold.
