I held a dinner at my apartment in connection with the departure of the KWP CC delegation for Moscow. Kim Il Sung, Kim Il, Kim Chang-man, Ri He-sun [sic], Pak Yong-guk, and Pak Seong-cheol were present.

During a conversation Kim Il Sung, touching on the progress of agricultural work this year, noted that the summing of the results of the agricultural year and the distribution in the agricultural cooperatives will be done by the end of December, that is, a month earlier than last year. The gross harvest of grains, including soybeans, is approximately 3,700,000 tons. Kim Il Sung said, this amount is sufficient for food needs, but insufficient to develop animal husbandry. In order to increase the production of fodder beginning next year the area devoted to corn will be considerably expanded. Steps will be taken at the same time to increase the production of fertilizers in order to increase the harvest of corn per unit area to 3-4 tons. The production of potash fertilizer will be organized at the [Staromadonsky] cement plant. Breeding work at state farms will be considerably increased. The seeds of some types of high-yielding varieties of corn will obviously be ordered in the Soviet Union.

At the present time the construction of enterprises is being done to reprocess germs of corn into butter. Ten such enterprises will be built throughout the republic.

I asked Kim Il Sung whether the potato harvest is included in this gross grain harvest.

Kim Il Sung replied affirmatively and said that there are about 200,000 tons in corn and a recalculation was made from an estimate of four kilograms of potatoes being equal to one kilogram of grains.
