Summary of Nakasone – Zhao Ziyang Meeting Briefing

At the start, Prime Minister Nakasone explained the Japanese side’s basic policy on Japan-China relations. Japan is cooperating in economic exchange.

(Zhao) The economic relationship is relatively smooth.

We appraise the Prime Minister as making great efforts. We would like to further promote cooperation in technology, funding, and joint ventures.

The excess of imports over exports in trade is challenging, so we ask for you to work toward its improvement. We would like to have discussions on separate issues at next year’s ministerial meeting. We look forward to increased investment from Japanese enterprises. We hope for the Third Yen Loan’s expansion.

(Prime Minister) Competitiveness and supply stability are important. Japan will make efforts on trade, but we would like China as well to make greater efforts. We will examine the requests for the Third Yen Loan.

How about China also studying well (for example, China’s high taxes) the circumstances in which, with the appreciation of the yen, Japanese enterprises are not investing in China but are investing in Singapore and Thailand?

(Prime Minister) We request cooperation regarding schools for Japanese.

Zhao and Nakasone discuss economic relations between China and Japan.
