TO THE CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE 4TH ARMY

 

COMBAT INSTRUCTION Nº 2 FOR RECONNAISSANCE OF THE MARITIME FRONT

 

THE CP IS [IN A] FOREST 20 km west of PERLEBERG

0900 19 March

The troops of the SGA are restoring their combat effectiveness after mass nuclear strikes were launched on them and at the same time are preparing to commit the second echelon of the SGA, the 1st AK of the "Orange".

 

In connection with this the Commanding General of the troops of the front

 

HAS ORDERED:

 

1. Conduct reconnaissance in the zone from the right: WINSEN-CUXHAVEN, from the left: CELLE-DIEPHOLZ-WINTERSWIJK, concentrating the main effort in the direction of WITTENBURG-LINGEN-ANTWERP with the missions of:

 

- establishing the presence, locations, and composition of the means of nuclear attack of the 1st AK (FRG) of the enemy and identify their preparations for use, continuously monitoring their relocation, devoting special attention to the regions: VISSELHÖVEDE, FALLINGBOSTEL, WALSRODE; 10 km south of BOCHOLT, 15 km northeast of SOLTAU, WIETZENDORF, MÜNSTER;

 

- determine the numbering system, composition, combat effectiveness, grouping, location, and nature of the operations of the troops of the 1st AK (FRG) and the pd's formed in the regions: south of BREMERHAVEN and LINGEN, RHEINE, FÜRSTENHAU, their intentions to use them, the readiness time, and the direction of concentration of the main efforts, paying special attention in the sectors BREMERHAVEN-LÜNEBURG, MEPPEN-SOLTAU;

 

- determine the steps to prepare lines of defense and the degree of their engineer preparation along the western bank of the river WESER in the sector BREMEN-NIENBURG  and at the boundary of the river EMS in the sector ASCHENDORF-RHEINE,

 

- identify the changes in composition, grouping, and enemy air operations, especially air units of nuclear-capable aircraft; follow their rebasing and devote special attention to: JEVER (25 km northwest of WILHELMSHAVEN), OLDENBURG, WILDESHAUSEN, KIRCHHATEN (15 km west of BREMEN), HARPSTEDT (20 km northwest of BREMEN), RHEINE, BECHTA;

 

- determine the location of the enemy's air defense equipment and monitor their changes in location and operations continuously, especially in the areas: [SEBEN], ROTENBURG, BREMEN, VERDEN, SULINGEN, BREMEN, SYKE, CLOPPENBURG, OLDENBURG, NORDEN, WILHELMHAVEN, LEER;

 

- establish the composition of fleet forces at [the following] naval bases: CUXHAVEN, WILHELMSHAVEN, and BREMEN; monitor their activities, and identify the nature of operations to protect the coastline and steps for a possible assault landings;

 

- determine the location and subordination of control posts and radioelectronic equipment; monitor their activity and locations in [the following] areas continuously: BUCHHOLZ, MÜNSTER, SOLTAU, FIRSTENAU [SIC, probably FÜRSTENAU]; devote special attention to identifying the operation and determining the locations of ground forces radioelectronic warfare units;

 

- determine the location of the rear facilities of the 1st AK (FRG), monitor their activity and relocation, identify the targets, scale, and direction of shipments in the areas (in sectors): excluding BREMEN, NIENBURG, CLOPPENBURG, FRISOYTE, MEPPEN, and LÖNINGEN;

 

- determine the losses of enemy personnel and combat equipment, the most vulnerable places in combat formations, where and in what direction suppressed units are retreating, and also the intentions for their use;

 

2. [The following] are being allocated from the 17th rap to conduct aerial reconnaissance in support of the Army:

 

- for 19 March - 2 regimental sorties, [inserted by hand: "19 (36 s/l [sorties])

 

- for 20 March - 1.5 regimental sorties.

 

3. Three RPS-6 [radio direction-finding] stations with crews are being allocated from the 10th ortp [Independent Radiotechnical Regiment] by 1800 19 March to conduct Army COMINT and ELINT; the battalion CP is 10 km southwest of LEN[Z]EN.

 

4. Drop four special groups in [the following]areas:

 

- 20 km southwest of BREMERWÖRDE;

 

- [SEBEN],

 

- 10 km south of ROTENBURG;

 

- HOYA.

 

Beginning 1800 19 March 1975 an IL-14, AN-2, and Mi-8 from the PERLEBERG (main) and NEUHAUS (reserve) airfields are being allocated for 19 and 20 March to drop the Army special groups.

 

Do not plan operations of Army special groups in the areas:

 

- AURICH, 10 km north of OLDENBURG,

 

- 20 km northwest of LÖNINGEN,

 

- CLOPPENBURG, 15 km southwest of BASSUM,

 

- 10 km east of NORDHORN, 15 km southwest of TER APEL.

 

4. Submit reports to the Front Intelligence Directorate daily as of 0800 and 1900 as of 0600 and 1700.

 

Send especially important information immediately by technical means of communications.
