NOTES FOR INTERIM PRESS SECRETARY

SMUGGLING – NORTH KOREA’S EMBASSY

Ambassador Møller called me today to get the latest information on the above matter. I briefly outlined [Torleiv] Anda’s conversation with the North Korean ambassador [Hyeon Jun-geuk (Hyon Jun Guk)] to Beijing, our reply to Anda, and the visa applications of the four new embassy functionaries.

Møller informed me that yesterday, [Swedish] Cabinet Secretary [Sverker] Åstrøm had a conversation with North Korea’s ambassador, Kim [sic; Gil Jae-gyeong (Kil Jae Gyong)], and on his own accord recommended Kim to leave Sweden. It seemed to Møller that this appeal would be followed up by a formal deportation order if not respected.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has today discussed the matter in the Foreign Affairs Committee. (The Foreign Affairs Committee is an advisory parliamentary board). The outcome of the discussions are expected to be announced this evening.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 21. October 1976

Sv. Gjellum

The North Korean ambassador is advised to leave Sweden following the discovery of smuggling activities in North Korean embassies.
