[to] MOSCOW, USSR NKVD - to Cde. BERIA

On 14 August of this year a rebel partisan detachment seized Bay [Baicheng]. I will report in detail on receipt of a written report.

As a result of stubborn battles the second cavalry brigade of LESKIN broke through the enemy defense in the region of Kobuk [sic] (not on the map, 30 km northwest of Koktokay [Fuyun]), and forced the Chinese to retreat to Altai. The enemy used SB and I-15 aircraft in the battles. I will report information about the brigade's losses and captured weapons separately.

On 19 August FIRSOV on a road east of Shikho [sic] seized seven trucks with wheat for Shikho. The convoy and vehicles were destroyed.

On 23 August the enemy retreating from the region of Kum [sic]-Beshen' [sic] (25 km north of Koktokay) turned sharply to the south and headed for Koktokay.

Up to 200 enemy soldiers and officers were killed and taken prisoner during the pursuit of the enemy by LESKIN's brigade. The weapons seized were rendered unusable by the Chinese.

During 23 August units of LESKIN's brigade entered Koktokay and the Utu [sic]-Vulak  [sic]picket. The same day there was a raid on Kobuk by one I-15 aircraft, which dropped three bombs. Four soldiers of the brigade were killed and three were injured during the bombing. The pursuit of the enemy continued simultaneously with an attack on Altai. The total strength of the Chinese defending Kobuk has reached 1,500 soldiers and officers.

On 22 August the rebels detained two residents of Shikho in the region north of Chipeytszy [sic]. According to their statements up to 4,000 Dungans [Hui Muslims] have been left in Shikho to reinforce the defense.
