On the night of 2 to 3 August of this year, a private in the American armed forces - Johnson Carlos, born on 1927 in North Carolina, crossed the demarcation line and appeared in the Soviet military commandant’s office in the city of Urfar.
In the commandant’s office, Johnson stated that he did not want to return to his homeland and asked the Soviet authorities in Austria to grant him asylum, on which subject he wrote a written statement. Johnson stated that he had been in the army since 1946 with small interruptions. He served with the American troops in Korea and was wounded twice. He arrived in Austria at the end of June, 1953. In July, he underwent a month-long course in military intelligence.
A special military unit is conducting an interrogation.
