Subject: the visit of DPRK Vice-President Gang Ryang-uk to Nigeria

On May 16 1978, the 5-day visit of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Vice-President Gang Ryang-uk to Nigeria, carried out at the invitation of General Shehu Yar’Adua, the Chief of the General Staff (the second-in-command in the Nigerian political hierarchy, after the head of state). On bilateral relations, [the two officials] examined the ways for implementing the provisions of the cooperation agreement, which materialized in measures in the field of agriculture (rice crops) and technical training for Nigerian cadres (by [building] a technical training center in Nigeria).

 

On general, international matters, [the two officials] exchanged views on the problems of Western Africa and on the question of the peaceful reunification of Korea, noting agreement ‘on most issues.’

 

In a public declaration, Yar’dua pointed out that ‘Nigeria supports the aspirations and efforts undertaken in the direction of the peaceful reunification of Korea, in accordance with the wishes of the [majority] of the Korean people.’
