Political Report for Mexico for January 1961
…President Adolfo Lopez Mateos, at a New Year ceremony in the National Palace, said that Mexico had ceased to be a “legend in the world and a name in geography” and had become “a power in world conscience.” How far this is true is a moot point, but the Mexican Government is seriously trying to attain a position, at least in American continental politics, somewhat similar to India’s in international affairs. In words reminiscent of those uttered by our Prime Minister in the USA more than a decade ago, Lopez Mateos declared that “Mexico cannot remain indifferent to world changes and hopes that peace will eventually prevail. In these trying times Mexico reaffirms its principles of liberty, democracy and social justice.”
