comrade KUZNETSOV.

1. On August 29 this year [I] received from MACARTHUR’S headquarters a chart with the marked dividing lines of the zones taken, or subject to being taken, by the forces of the allied states. The zone of the Soviet armed forces includes: MANCHURIA, including the Liaodong Peninsula with the ports of DAIREN [Dalian] and PORT ARTHUR [Lüshun], the northern part of KOREA up to the 38th parallel north, SAKHALIN and the KURILE Islands.

Thus, the distribution of the zones in the part concerning the Soviet Union is in accordance with the instructions of your No. 11185 with the changes, supplied under No. 12512 on 25 August of this year.

2. On the basis of information received from general MACARTHUR, general [illegible], and a number of officers, it was determined:

a) Territory of HOKKAIDO and the northeastern half of HONSHU up to the line of TAKAMA, YOKOHAMA will be occupied by the 8th army of the USA, consisting of the 9th, 10th, and the 14th corps, which include seven divisions and two standalone regiments; the occupation of HOKKAIDO must be finished on the thirtieth, and HONSHU on the fifteenth day after the beginning of the landing.

b) The southwestern half of HONSHU, KYUSHU and the RYUKYU islands will be occupied by the 6th army of the USA consisting of the 1st, the 5th, and the 11th corps, including eight divisions, including three naval infantry landing divisions. The occupation of the said territory by the 6th army will be finished on the 23rd day.

c) The southern part of KOREA, to the south of the 38th parallel will be occupied by the 24th corps of the 10th USA army, consisting of three divisions; it will finish on the 27th day.

According to the information gleaned from talking to the officers and from newspaper reporting, the landing of USA forces in JAPAN began on August 27 of this year. The first to land were contingents of the 8th army under the protection of 188 military ships, from which 14 are battleships, including 12 American ones, of the “MISSOURI” type.

The order of occupation: only the main political [and] economic centers and military sites are being occupied.

3. The dispatch of forces from MANILA is going on non-stop. From conversations with officers and soldiers of the American army, it is known that ships with soldiers of the 32nd and 43rd divisions in the course of 27 and 28 August departed for Japanese waters. In the port, on the aerodrome, and in the city of MANILA, there is great activity around-the-clock.
