With the withdrawal of US forces, ROK forces will assume full responsibility for the DMZ, with exception of Panmunjom. Additionally, the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections will have a strong effect on the political stability of ROK.
Upon concluding the discussions on the reduction of US troops, Park Chung Hee announces that, with the exception of Panmunjom, ROK forces will be responsible for the DMZ.

The DPRK urged the Neutral Nations Supervisory Committee to secure the immediate release of North Korean pilot, who crash landed with MIG-15 on 3 December 1970. Their appeal is due to the failure of UN Command-DPRK talks on the matter. Additionally, the hijacking of KAL plane F-27 on 23 January 1971 by a South Korean youth has been attributed to "North Koreans' underground activities."
A representative from Turkey announces his government's withdrawal from the UN Command, while a representative from Thailand announces his government's withdrawal of the Thai Company from the UN Forces in Korea. However, both governments will keep the military attaches as liason officers on the MAC.

In efforts to ease trade restrictions with socialist countries, the ROK has granted an entry visa to a Soviet national.
In connection with the presidential and National Assembly elections, violent clashes between police forces and the opposition NDP have taken place. Accusations from both NDP and DRP are being slung, and the current ruling party DRP is using the fear of potential North Korean subversion to repress the opposition party.
January 15, 1971
President Park Chung Hee reiterates that his main priority is the South Korean economy. He believes that a strong economy will allow for unification and stronger national security. Additionally, Park believes that the power balance in East Asia will depend on China's progress.
January 14, 1971
During a press conference, President Park Chung Hee announces the withdrawal of ROK troops from Vietnam. Kuzbari notes that this decision is likely due to the upcoming presidential election, the strong opposition party, and the withdrawal of US troops from the ROK.

Kuzbari writes about the upcoming elections in South Korea and reports that a new political party called Nationalist Party has formed in opposition to the NDP. Regarding trade, the ROK government is opening trade relations with non-hostile communist countries. And regarding relations with North Korea, an ROK fishing boat was attacked by North Koreans due to possible spy activity.
