The ROK government deals with student protesters by reopening schools, but the government and National Assembly is still divided. The functionality of the National Assembly depends on the relationship between the NDP and DRP. Additionally, all sides share displeasure from all over US Secretary of Defense's statement that the US will not longer provide ground troops for future Asian conflicts.

South Korea National Assembly election results show that over one-third of votes went to NDP and voters are going to younger, advocate-style politicians.

In connection with the upcoming election, UNCURK observed a disinterest of voters for the National Assembly campaigns and a general dislike of the 'horse trading' of seat distribution. Additionally, the opposition NDP will have difficulties gaining seats because of the fragmentation of the party.

National Assembly elections will be held in South Korea on 25 May 1971. While the DRP's National Assembly campaign remains similar to its presidential campaign, the NDP pledges to lift curfew bans, corruption, and give priority to housing shortages for low income people.

In connection with the presidential and National Assembly elections, violent clashes between police forces and the opposition NDP have taken place. Accusations from both NDP and DRP are being slung, and the current ruling party DRP is using the fear of potential North Korean subversion to repress the opposition party.

UNCURK's current primary task is to observe the Presidential and National Assembly elections in South Korea.
